Race Course
Short Course: About 6ish miles and 1500’ of elevation gain. Start/Finish at Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge (in Alta’s first parking lot). Start by running up the dirt road towards Albion Base and merge onto the Albion Basin Trail. About a mile up the trail you’ll turn onto switchbacks that climb and and cross the road onto the Catherine’s Pass Trail. 3/4 of a mile or so up the trail you’ll turn right to traverse over and down into the campground. You’ll climb up out of the campground on a steep dirt road that lays you onto the Devil’s Castle Trail. It’s gonna get beautiful! Running under the limestone face of Devil’s Castle is Super Cool! Exit the Castle by staying right at the fork in the trail to connect down thru the forest to the Cecret Lake Trail. Turn right on the Cecret Lake Trail followed bay a left and down past Alf’s Restaurant. Almost Home! Connect with the Albion Basin Trail back down to the Finish at the Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge.

Long Course = Alta-Brigthon Loop. This is a true Wednesday night Beast or Feast depending on your fitness level:) It’s about 9 miles and depending on your watch/strava 2500’-2900’ in elevation gain. All Long Course Runners must carry a headlamp. Start and Finish at Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge (in Alta’s first parking lot). Start by running up the road towards Albion base, turn left turn up dirt road, cross Little Cottonwood road (note: a 5 minute road closure will allow runners to cross the road to the trailhead.) Once across the road, start climbing the steep/stair like trail. Several minutes later you’ll be relieved to turn right on a dirt road (slightly less steep:). Your on your way to Twin Lakes Pass. Enjoy the unique surroundings that include remnants of the mining era. Runners have 55 minutes from the start of the race to make it to Twin Lakes Pass which is about 2 miles and 1500’ of elevation gain from the start. If you can’t make it within 55 minutes, for your safety, you’ll be turned around to go back to the start. At Twin Lakes Pass take in the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and lakes below. Keep it moving by taking the single track down into Solitude. Right turn and down on dirt road into Brighton. As you pass the bottom of Twin Lakes you’ll turn right and up a short, steep section of dirt road. You’ll then turn left on the Brighton Lakes trail that wanders thru granite and the forest over to Lake Mary. At Lake Mary the trail jogs left and you’ll pass a rustic storage cabin nestled in the aspens giving forth beautiful views of Brighton. If you run the Alta- Brighton Loop often makes make sure to follow the course flags after passing the storage cabin das the course performs a small derivation (avoids use of unauthorized trail) from the traditional Alta-Brigthon Loop. Ok back to the description! You’ll now climb up to Lake Mary. Please be polite and respectful of all public trail users. Once at Lake Mary you’ll skirt its shores and start the climb to Catherine’s Pass . It’s time to start feeling good about yourself. You’ve made it this far and you’ve got one last climb to the pass and then it’s all downhill! Whoever thought you’d be racing here on Wednesday Night! The trail snakes its way up the lakes basin in and out of the forest. With one last chug you reach Catherine’s Pass. You did it! It’s all downhill/EZ street from here. You’ll descend the Catherine’s Pass Trail, cross the road and continue down the switchback single track. Right turn and down the Albion Basin Trail. Be careful on this stretch as it is steep and rocky in segments and you’ll be tired. The Albion Basin Trail merges into the dirt road at the Albion Ski Base. One last short stretch on the road back to the Finish! and your done. Wednesday Night Mission Accomplished! Well done my friend!
Note: the Garmin Map link below starts and finishes near the parking lot. You’ll be starting and finishing up the dirt road at the Alta Town Park so with that in mind the course is about 9.25 miles. As mentioned above, many Strava accounts show this loop to have closer to 2500’ feet in elevation gain as watches/devices vary.
2nd Note: if you’ve never run or hiked this loop, give it a shot before the race to get comfortable with what to expect.
